How We Prevent Blindness - Al Basar International Foundation

Globally, visual impairment and preventable blindness continue to rob millions of their independence, livelihood, and dignity. Over 80% of all visual impairments are either entirely preventable or curable. In many remote communities across Africa and Asia, a simple 15-minute procedure or a pair of glasses can be the dividing line between complete darkness and a thriving future.

Al Basar International Foundation has assisted over 29 million individuals across the world. To deliver both immediate relief and lasting change, we implement a comprehensive, three-pillar strategy: Prevention, Treatment, and Empowerment.

1. Prevention & Early Detection: Stopping Vision Loss Before It Begins

Early diagnosis is our first and most effective defense against irreversible sight loss. Conditions such as refractive errors, glaucoma, and childhood eye disorders often develop unnoticed until significant damage has already occurred.

• Proactive School Eye Screenings: Up to 40% of childhood blindness is preventable or treatable. We dispatch specialized teams to primary and secondary schools in rural and low-income regions to conduct comprehensive visual acuity tests. Children diagnosed with refractive errors receive custom prescription glasses, ensuring unhindered education and development.

• Community Awareness & Mobile Screenings: We conduct outreach diagnostic campaigns in remote villages, screening community members for intraocular pressure (glaucoma), corneal scarring, and retinal damage, connecting vulnerable patients to specialized care before sight is permanently lost.

2. Treatment: High-Volume Surgeries & Permanent Healthcare Anchors

For individuals who already suffer from advanced vision loss, timely and accessible medical intervention is critical. We operate a dual-model system combining mobile surgical expeditions with permanent hospitals:

• Mobile Outreach Eye Camps: In areas without clinical infrastructure, our mobile medical caravans travel directly into underserved districts. Over more than 2,300 outreach campaigns, our surgical teams have provided hundreds of thousands of free cataract surgeries, dispensed medications, and fitted millions of prescription glasses.

• A Network of 31 Specialized Eye Hospitals: Long-term blindness prevention requires permanent infrastructure. Al Basar has built and operates a network of 31 permanent eye hospitals across Africa and Asia (including the Makkah Eye Specialist Hospital network). These centres provide continuous care, advanced ophthalmic surgeries, corneal transplants, and treatments for complex conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

3. Empowerment & Sustainability: Training the Next Generation

Mobile camps and hospital beds cannot eradicate blindness without qualified medical personnel on the ground. In many parts of Africa and Asia, there is less than one ophthalmologist for every one million people.

• Medical Colleges & Ophthalmic Institutes: We establish specialized training colleges and residency programmes to train local doctors, ophthalmic nurses, optometrists, and biomedical technicians.

• Capacity Building & Local Leadership: By transferring skills, surgical expertise, and clinical governance to local healthcare teams, we ensure communities build the autonomous infrastructure needed to protect sight for generations to come.
