SpecialSPECIAL PROGRAMMES

Specialist expertise. Better access to eye care.

Some eye conditions require more than routine examinations or standard eye surgery. They need specialist knowledge, advanced clinical skills and experience in managing complex cases.

Through our Special Programmes, Al Basar International Foundation sends specialist eye-care professionals to countries where patients need access to advanced assessment and treatment for a wide range of eye conditions.

Our teams work with local eye-care professionals and healthcare facilities to manage complex cases, share specialist expertise and help patients receive the care they need.

From glaucoma and retinal diseases to squint, oculoplastic conditions and other complex eye disorders, our aim is to make specialised eye care more accessible to people who might otherwise struggle to receive it.

Because every patient deserves access to the right specialist care.

SPECIALIST MISSIONS

Bringing specialist eye care closer to those who need it

In many countries, access to certain eye-care subspecialties remains limited. Patients may need to travel long distances or face delays before they can see a specialist with the expertise required to assess and treat their condition.

Al Basar works to address these gaps by deploying experienced eye-care professionals to provide specialised services in countries where the need has been identified.

These missions focus on complex cases across different areas of ophthalmology. Working alongside local medical teams, our specialists assess patients, undertake appropriate procedures and support the delivery of more specialised eye care.

By bringing expertise closer to patients, we aim to improve access to treatment and strengthen the capacity of local eye-care services.

CLINICAL SUBSPECIALTIES

Our areas of specialist eye care

Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and lead to irreversible sight loss if not appropriately managed. Our specialist missions support the assessment and management of patients with glaucoma, including complex cases requiring specialist expertise.

Trachoma

Trachoma is an infectious disease that can cause blindness, particularly when repeated infections lead to scarring and damage to the eyelids. Our specialist teams support the assessment and treatment of patients with trachoma-related complications, including cases requiring specialised surgical care.

Retinal Diseases

The retina is essential for vision, and retinal conditions can threaten sight if they are not diagnosed and managed appropriately. Our retinal specialists assess and treat suitable cases requiring advanced clinical expertise and specialised procedures.

Low Vision Assessment (LVA)

Some people continue to experience significant visual difficulties even after appropriate treatment or when their condition cannot be fully corrected. Low vision assessment helps establish how a person uses their remaining sight and identify suitable support, rehabilitation strategies and visual aids.

Squint and Paediatric Ophthalmology

Squint, also known as strabismus, occurs when the eyes do not align properly. Our specialist teams assess and manage appropriate cases, including children who may need further investigation or treatment to support their visual development.

Oculoplastic Surgery

Oculoplastic care focuses on conditions affecting the eyelids and surrounding structures of the eye. These conditions may affect vision, eye health, comfort or appearance. Our specialists assess and manage cases that require dedicated oculoplastic expertise.

Orbital Conditions

The orbit is the bony cavity surrounding the eye. Orbital conditions can affect the eye, its movement and the surrounding tissues. Our specialist teams assess and manage suitable cases requiring expertise in orbital disease and surgery.

Laser Treatment

Certain eye conditions can be treated using specialised ophthalmic laser procedures. Where indicated and available, our specialist professionals provide or support appropriate laser treatment as part of the patient's overall clinical care.

Other Complex Eye Conditions

Our specialist missions also address other complex eye conditions that require subspecialist assessment, surgical expertise or advanced treatment. The specific services provided depend on the needs identified in each country and the clinical capacity available for the mission.

COLLABORATIVE CARE

Working together to improve access to specialist care

Our missions are delivered in collaboration with local eye-care professionals and healthcare facilities. This helps ensure that patients are assessed appropriately, suitable cases are identified and treatment is provided within the available clinical facilities and resources.

Where possible, collaboration also creates opportunities for local professionals to exchange knowledge and experience with visiting specialists, supporting the wider development of eye-care services.

Every mission is planned around the needs of the patients and the specialist services that can be safely delivered.
